There’ve been plenty of Penrith Panthers who’ve earned their way into the State of Origin arena. So many, in fact, that we’ve been able to compile our top squad of Origin representatives but first – who’s the first Panther, past or present, that you’d pick in your Origin squad?
It’s the pinnacle of rugby league: State of Origin. From the point scoring madness of Ryan Girdler (who still holds several Origin point scoring records) to the ferocity of Mark Geyer, there are plenty of things that define a great Origin player.
The Panthers have been lucky in that they’ve been graced by 27 Origin representatives since it became ‘State of Origin’ in 1980. Brad Izzard was the first ever Penrith player to be selected, playing the open match of the 1982 series – the year in which he made his first grade debut! The last time there was a Panthers representative in Origin was 2012 when Michael Jennings, Tim Grant and Luke Lewis earned a combined 8 caps over the series – unfortunately all those players have moved on now.
After looking back over the years, here’s our Penrith Panthers Origin Squad:
And ofcourse, the honourable mentions (i.e. every other Panther to have played Origin):
It’s an exciting time at the foot of the mountains and it’s almost certain that we’ll see names like Matt Moylan, Waqa Blake and Reagan Campbell-Gillard added to this list sooner rather than later.
