The late season injury crisis introduced us to NSW Cup prop Lelani Latu who didn’t muck around when called up to the NRL. 6 games to round out the season and his name was on every Penrith fans’ lips.
PLAYER RATING: 7/10
Where Latimore and RCG are the no-frills, do-a-job forwards, Latu is the big-hit, 1000mph kind. The kind that wins support of the fans with every big tackle and every lung-bursting run.
There wasn’t a lot of pressure on Latu when he debuted. Penrith had already tumbled out of finals contention and he was promoted from a NSW Cup side that was brushing their opposition aside on a weekly basis.
He showed us that he can put any of the best player on their backside and the aggression he brought to the pack highlighted an area of Penrith’s game that has been tamed by more physical opposition.
There won’t be many more than another 6 appearances for Latu in 2016 (save for another unholy injury toll) but it’s always good to know that he’s there if we need him.
